The city was an important trading centre during the Mughal era before serving as the winter capital of the Afghan Durrani Empire from until the city was captured by the Sikh Empire in , who were then followed by the British in The city of Peshawar has a population of 1,, according to the census, making it the largest city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the sixth-largest in Pakistan ,  while Peshawar District has a population of 4,, The name was noted to be Purshawar and Purushavar by Al-Biruni. Peshawar was founded on the Gandhara Plains in the broad Valley of Peshawar. The city likely first existed as a small village in the 5th century BCE ,  within the cultural sphere of eastern ancient Persia. A locally-made vase fragment that was found in Peshawar depicts a scene from Sophocles ' play Antigone. The city was then captured by Gondophares , founder of the Indo-Parthian Kingdom. Gondophares established the nearby Takht-i-Bahi monastery in 46 CE. In the first century of the Common era , Purushapura came under control of Kujula Kadphises , founder of the Kushan Empire. Around CE, the armies of the Sasanid Emperor Shapur I launched an attack against Peshawar,  and severely damage Buddhist monuments and monasteries throughout the Valley of Peshawar.

In addition to the vocational training that the women received, the project also provided work readiness and life skills training to 1, girls in Peshawar. The training these girls received is just the beginning of a prosperous future for both the girls and their families. Kaneez Fatima, Principal of the College of Home Economics in Peshawar, emphasized the importance of boosting the confidence of young women. The women showcased their artwork, fabric work, dresses and paintings, and received their course completion certificates during the event.
